

Elvira Theresa Hess (nee Tolomer) passed away on October 17, 2013. Elvira was born on April 27, 1918 to Augusto and Elvira (Nappi) Tolomer in Yonkers, NY. She was the youngest of seven brothers and sisters; Louis, John, Ray, and Don Tolomer, and sisters Rose (Paterra) and Genesia (Knecht) who predeceased her. As a six-month old infant, Elvira contracted the Spanish Flu during the epidemic of 1918 and was cared for by her older sister, Genesia, the only family member who did not contract the flu.
Prior to her marriage to Joseph W. Hess in 1947 at St. Joseph’s Church, Yonkers, NY she was employed as a nurse’s aid at St. John’s Riverside Hospital, and also worked at Alexander Smith Carpet Shop before beginning her life as a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana (Maggiola) of Phoenix, AZ; son-in-law, Mark, two grandchildren, Joseph of Phoenix, AZ, and Donna (Davis) of Fountain, Colorado. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Teagan Davis of Fountain, Colorado.
Mrs. Hess was a longtime resident on Locust Hill Avenue, before her confinement to the Regency Extended Care Facility where she resided for the past 10 years. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s and St. Margaret’s Churches in Yonkers.
Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Tuesday morning only from 9 to 10 am. Funeral Service will take place in the funeral home on Tuesday October 22nd at 10am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
