
Frederick J. Fabiano, the son of the late Carmine and Angelina Palumbo Fabiano, was born in New York City on April 17, 1937 and was baptized at the Capuchin Church of Our Lady Queen of Angels, East Harlem, NY. He grew up in Our Lady Queen of Angels parish along with his three sisters and two brothers: Mary, Dolores, Lucy, Carmine and Anthony. Frederick attended Our Lady Queen of Angels Elementary School, E. Harlem [1943-1951] and St. Mary Seminary High School, Garrison, NY [1951-55].
He entered the Capuchin Franciscans at St. Lawrence Novitiate, Milton, MA on August 31, 1955 where he received the religious name “Philip”. He attended St. Anthony College Seminary, Hudson, NH [1956-1960] and pronounced perpetual vows on September 1, 1959.
Philip studied theology at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison NY [1960-1964] and was ordained the priesthood at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY on January 11, 1964. Following his ordination Fr. Philip ministered as a parochial assistant at Our Lady of Sorrows, NYC [1964-67]; Our Lady Queen of Angels, NYC [1967-69] and St. John Vianney, Bronx, NY [1969-1970]. During his time he began his studies at Fordham University in Religious Studies.
In 1970, Philip was assigned to St. Michael Parish, East New York as an associate pastor and vicar of the friar community. In 1976, he received a Master of Arts in education from St. John University, Jamaica, NY. From 1977- 1981 he attended Cathedral College, Douglaston, NY where he received a Masters of Divinity degree.
In 1978 Fr. Philip was appointed pastor and guardian of St. Michael Parish/Friary, Brooklyn, NY and was instrumental in the East Brooklyn Church’s initiation of the Nehemiah Houses Program.
At the Provincial Chapter of 1984 Fr. Philip was elected as Vicar Provincial Minister and appointed guardian of St. Conrad Friary, White Plains until 1987. At the Chapter of 1987 his was elected Provincial Councilor and appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY where he ministered until 1993. While pastor of Sacred Heart, Fr. Philip became actively involved in Yonkers Interfaith Education and Leadership, which offered an opportunity for involvement by citizens of the City of Yonkers in the then current housing and discrimination crisis.
Fr. Philip ministered as a campus chaplain at Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT [1994-95]; parochial assistant at St. Michael, Brooklyn, NY [1995-97]; chaplain at St. Rose Home and parochial assistant at Our Lady of Sorrows, Lower East Side, Manhattan [1997-2000] and parochial vicar at St. Joseph the Worker, E. Patchogue, NY [2003-04].
Father’s frail health bid him to warmer climates where he ministered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Miami, FL for fourteen years. Fr. Philip passed away in New York City where he was about to begin his new ministry as chaplain at Leo House, a Catholic guesthouse providing hospitality to travelers whose dedicated staff includes the Sisters of St. Agnes. Fr. Philip was survived by his sister Lucy, his sisters-in-law Marie and Rosemarie and the children of his siblings.
Viewing will be held at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10703 on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8, 2015 from 2-4:00 p.m. and 7-9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Interment Sacred Heart Cemetery.
