Born on January 17, 1968, in New Rochelle, New York, Jay built a life centered around family, friendship, and the simple joys that meant the most to him. He attended Iona Prep (86), and went on to continue his education while playing baseball at Mercy, Westchester Community College, and, most importantly, Concordia College, where he met the love of his life, Kelly. They shared 31 wonderful years of marriage.
Many knew Jay (Tuna) from his years on the softball fields. From Kings to BNY, Barchella’s Fellas, Check King, and so many more, Jay made lasting memories and friendships that he treasured deeply. He was a three-time Softball Hall of Fame inductee, but what meant most to him were the teammates and bonds formed during those special years.
Jay was a hardworking man and the proud owner of K.T.K. Sporting Goods, a business named after his family. He also loved bartending, where his humor, warmth, and larger-than-life personality lit up every room. But above all, his favorite role was caddying for his son, Tyler.
He had a deep love for life’s simple pleasures: fishing, golfing, horse racing and throwing darts. Most of all, though, he cherished being a father. You could find Jay at nearly every one of Tyler and Kayla sporting event, either coaching or cheering from the sidelines. He was fiercely loyal to his teams: the New York Yankees, Minnesota Vikings, New York Islanders, and Oklahoma Sooners.
Music was a huge part of Jay’s life. From Styx to Chicago, Bruce Springsteen to the Eagles, music was something he loved deeply. In his final days, it brought comfort and connection to those by his side.
Jay is survived by his loving wife, Kelly Fitzpatrick; his beloved children, Kayla and Tyler, who were his entire world & his loyal dog Blaze; his parents, John and Alexis; in laws Al & Kathy Fitzpatrick, his sister, Alycin; his brother-in-law, Kevin Fitzpatrick (Molly); his nieces and nephews; and his goddaughter, Emily Fogarty.
Though our hearts are broken, we find peace in knowing Jay is no longer suffering. We will miss him every single day, but we know he will always be with us — in the music we hear, in the sky over the ocean, and in the smiles brought on by the kind of witty sarcasm only life can give.
