

John Panko, a lifelong Yonkers resident, passed away on Wednesday March 19, 2014 at the Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Ossining. He was 90 years old. He was born on October 22, 1923 to Steven and Martha Panko in Yonkers where he was raised and educated, graduating from Saunders Trade and Technical School in 1942. Mr. Panko was a machinist at the DeLackner Helicopter Co. in Mt. Vernon from 1947 until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of UAW Local #259 in Ft. Lee, N.J. Mr. Panko served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy-Aviation Metal Smith from 1943 to 1946. He was a 2nd Class SV6 and was stationed in San Diego and Pearl Harbor. He was a longtime parishioner and usher at St. Nicholas of Myra Church. He enjoyed golf and playing the accordian. He was also an accordian instructor. On May 22, 1948, he married Ann Sarich at St. Nicholas of Myra Church in Yonkers. Mrs. Panko died December 3, 2007. Survivors include one son, Mark Panko and his wife Joan of Hopewell Junction and two daughters, Cathy Panko-Drought and her husband Robert of Portchester and Janet Panko of Scarsdale. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Lindsay, Daniel and Michael. He was predeceased by a brother, Stephen Panko. Visitation will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Friday 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Parastas Friday 7 pm. Funeral Service will be held in St. Nicholas of Myra Church, White Plains on Saturday March 22nd at 11 am. Final disposition will be private.
