John F. Skladony, cherished husband, loving father, adored grandfather, brother, father-in-law, brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, cousin, and friend to all, passed away on Saturday January 11th, 2025, surrounded by family. John was the husband to Laurie Maher Skladony, devoted father to Megan Skladony Cosgrove, Jennifer Skladony and Brieann Skladony. He is the adored grandfather to Sean Skladony, Emma, JT, Maggie, Charlotte Cosgrove and Lily and Connor Olsen. Brother to Robert Skladony and his wife Lynn Haley, Susan Skladony DuRosss and her husband Jim DuRoss, brother-in-law to Cliff Maher, his spouse Tom Maiello and Carol Maher-Epina. Uncle to four nephews, two nieces, great uncle to fourteen nieces and nephews. He treasured his connection to his son-in-law Joseph Cosgrove, and life-long best friends of 60 years, Bob and Susan Burns. John graduated St. Anthony’s School in 1967, Sacred Heart High School in 1971 and Manhattan College in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, minoring in Biomedical Engineering. He was a respected employee of Philips Medical Systems for over 40 years, specializing in cardiac catheterization equipment and an expert in installing and maintaining computerized cardiac imaging equipment at Lenox Hill and Mount Sinai Hospitals in Manhattan. He worked side-by-side with renowned interventional cardiologists.
John was a friend to all he met, neighbors, co-workers, people in the street, always caring and always steadfast. Available to assist or fix anything from electric, plumbing to computers. Rebuilding cars was a passion of his that he passed onto his grandson, Sean. Ready to enjoy a good meal, conversation, and a glass of fine red wine, with family and friends, old and new. John and Laurie loved hosting many dinners and barbeques, always welcoming loved ones for holidays and celebrations. One of John’s favorite accomplishments was his connection to his daughters, it was incredibly generous, loving and guiding. He could make them laugh at the drop of a hat, sharing time with them by teaching lifes lessons, celebrating their accomplishments and lifting them up in times of woe - a proud and protective father. John was also extremely proud and devoted to his seven grandchildren. They were always in his thoughts, and he celebrated them in any and all ways; from school functions to sports and hobbies, even making clever and stand-out Halloween costumes with them while gently sharing his ingenuity and craftiness. He always looked forward to planning the yearly Fall family vacation, where he would rent a “modest”’ 7-10 bedroom house on an East Coast Beach, preferably his beloved Dewey Beach in Delaware, for all 13 of us. John and Laurie met in 1971 when they were 17 years old. They were introduced to each other by John’s best friend and Laurie’s cousin, Bob. Laurie instantly fell in love with that lanky hunk, wearing 2 mismatched brown plaids. They married on August 16th, 1975 and were rarely apart. If you saw one of them, chances are you also saw the other. John and Laurie loved their life, sharing in each other's accomplishments, defeats, and blessings together. They were known to take lengthy drives, with no destination other than to find a good restaurant and a good dollar store. This August would have been their 50th wedding anniversary. All our lives are better because he was a part of it, and we will forever feel blessed to have had him. Our hearts are broken, and we will always miss him.
