Mary Catherine Doherty

Mary Catherine Doherty of Brooklyn, NY died at home on Friday January 22 after a brief illness. She was 65. Born November 8, 1950 in Yonkers, NY, Mary was the daughter of the late Michael and Catherine Ward Doherty. She graduated from Sacred Heart Grade and High School. Mary Catherine received a BS degree in nursing from Hunter College and a Masters Degree in Library Science from NYU. Mary retired from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2014 after nearly 40 years of service as a librarian in the Medical School. Mary was very active at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Brooklyn where she served as bible study teacher for young children and was a lector. A lover of the arts and theatre. Mary attended many New York City plays and was a supporter of the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Museum and other cultural institutions in New York City.. She also loved to travel, taking many trips with the Catholic Alumni Club as well as visiting out of area family members in the US and abroad. She is survived by her brothers, Michael (Shirley) of Pickerington, OH, Roger (Anne) of St. Dizier, France and John (JoAnn) of Hastings on Hudson. She also leaves 12 nephews and nieces as well as 13 grand-nephews and nieces. Calling hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave, Yonkers, NY, on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be at 9:30 AM Friday at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, 110 Shonnard Place Yonkers, NY, with burial in St Mary’s Cemetery. Donations in lieu of flowers to Fr. Brian Ward burse ( Capuchin friars of St Mary’s Province of NY) or St Patrick’s Home, Van Cortland Park West, Bronx, NY.
