
Nicholas J. Zappia, a resident of Somers formerly of Yonkers and Surf City, N.J. died Thursday October 20, 2011 at his residence. He was 84 years old. He was born on July 23, 1927 to Luigi and Angela Femia Zappia in Yonkers where he was raised and educated. He studied technical electricity in Saunders Trade and Technical School where he graduated in 1945. Mr. Zappia was an electrician in Yonkers from 1966 to 1989 when he retired. Previously, he was a business owner of the Radio Center in Yonkers from 1950 to 1966. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, Local 3 in Flushing, N.Y. from 1966 to 1989. Mr. Zappia served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Brant Beach, N.J. and was a member of the Ocean Acres Country Club and the Pine Shores Art Association both in N.J. He enjoyed fishing, boating, woodworking and golf. “He was an avid golfer who shot his age into his 80’s.” He was also an artist, his many sketches, oil & watercolor paintings were exhibited at local art shows in N.J. On October 18, 1959, he married Mary Mangan in St. Denis Church in Yonkers. Mrs. Zappia survives and lives in Somers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Nicholas Zappia of Boston, MA, three daughters, Jean Zappia of Yorktown Heights, Lynne Zappia of White Plains and Lisa Zappia Heanue of Somers and one sister, Antoinette Trapasso of Somers. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Ernest, Dominic and Anthony Zappia and one sister, Mary Zazza. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Sunday from 4-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church on Monday October 24th at 9:30 AM. Cremation will follow at Ferncliff Crematory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
