Wolodymyr Mykula

Wolodymyr B. Mykula passed away on October 21, 2014 at his home in Yonkers at age 88 after an almost year-long battle with brain cancer. He was born on January 24, 1926 in the village of Mykhaylevychi, Lviv Oblast, Ukraine to Reverend Vasyl and Maria (Olshanska). He graduated from London University and then obtained his graduate degree from Oxford University in England. He was an active member of numerous British Ukrainian organizations. He was the author and editor of many publications, including the ghost editor of the “The Ukrainian Review” for 18 years. Notably, he was the co-translator into English of poetry by the great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko which was then gathered into the book “Songs Out of Darkness”. While in England he was also a translator and journalist for the BBC. He married Bohdanna Maria Fryz in 1966 and lived in London until moving to the United States in 1971. He worked for many years as an editor at “Engineering Information, Inc.” in New York City. He continued to take an active part in Ukrainian organizations, including heading the Yonkers chapter of the UCCA. Students of the St. Michaels Ukrainian Studies School will remember him as a beloved history teacher and principal.

Wolodymyr had an incredible knowledge of world history and languages and always loved to learn, even when he lost his sight at age 76. He loved taking his children to museums and churches, and was himself an artist at heart, loving to sing, paint, and sketch. It was hard to keep up with his long legs and fast pace. He and his beloved wife enjoyed 5 children: Tania, Lala, Roman, Danylo, Yuriy, and 10 grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be in the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Friday October 24th from 5:30-9pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on Saturday October 25th at 10am. Interment will follow at Holy Spirit Cemetery in Campbell Hall, NY.
