He was born on September 23, 1934 in Newark, New Jersey to the late Edna St. Germain and the late Francis Xavier Rioux Sr. He grew up in Irvington, New Jersey and was a 1952 graduate of Irvington High School. He enlisted in the Army right after high school and was stationed in Germany until 1956. While stationed in Germany, he met his wife, a former schoolmate from Irvington High School, Maria Christina Schneider in a chance meeting while she was on vacation with her family. After a short courtship, they were married on June 9, 1956 in Steinheim, Germany. On returning back to the United States after his discharge from the Army in December of 1956, he attended the New York Institute of Dietetics. He then owned and managed, along with his brother and sister, the late Francis Rioux and the late Ruth Rioux-Edgley two restaurants, The Golden Rooster and Chick 'N Ribs. After closing both restaurants, he was employed by various companies including Singer Sewing Machines, Two Guys department store and Interstate United as Chef Manager all in New Jersey. During this time, he continued his service in the armed forces with the New Jersey National Guard where he reached the rank of Master Sergeant. Richard moved to California in 1993 with his wife and youngest son where he and Christopher started an Amish outdoor furniture business. He eventually continued his food service career as a civilian employee at MCAS El Toro, El Toro, California as well as La Palma Hospital, La Palma, CA, until his retirement.
He is predeceased by his wife, Maria in 2019 and survived by his daughter Doreen Rioux-Galligan (Donald) of Anaheim, California, his son Richard F. Rioux (Anne) of Brick, New Jersey, his daughter Michelle Green (Arthur) of West Long Branch, New Jersey, and his son Christopher G. Rioux of Anaheim, California. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Megan Lorenz (Richard) of Coralville, Iowa, Matthew Galligan of San Francisco, California, Madison Galligan of Anaheim, California, Richard J. Roux of Nashville, Tennessee, Samantha Matteo (Michael) of Brick, New Jersey, Bridget Green and Paige Green of West Long Branch, New Jersey, Anna Lorenz and James Lorenz of Coralville, Iowa.
Richard's burial with Military Honors will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on June 23, 2023.
