He was born in Decatur, Illinois to Hazel and Dean McVey. He was the middle child with an older sister, Audrey, and a younger sister, Joann.
He married the love of his life, Loretta Fern McVey, on September 14,1962. They were happily married for over 60 years. In that time, they had five children, Angie, Becky, Cathy, Jim, and Lori. His family grew as each of his children got married. He considered Robert, Darryl, Jim W, Natalie, and Jesse as his own. He was a beloved father who became a beloved grandfather to Cody, Colton, Ashley, Tiffany, Kyra, Caitlyn, Bobbi, Josh, Jared, Alyssa, Destiny, Haley, Deric, Quentin, and Brandon.
He loved drag racing, watching NASCAR, and listening to classic country music. Mostly, he loved spending time with his wife and family.
