He was the son of Joseph E. Schultis and Marion R. Schultis. During his childhood, Gary moved frequently as part of his father’s career in the United States Air Force, an experience that helped shape his resilience and strong sense of patriotism.
In 1975, Gary enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country. Following his military service, he made his home in Yuma, Arizona, where he began his career with the U.S. Border Patrol. Over the course of nearly 40 years, he served with dedication and integrity, ultimately retiring after a long and distinguished career.
Gary was known for his sharp mind and remarkable intuition. He had a way of understanding situations before others did, often seeming a step ahead, like a quiet game of chess always unfolding in his mind. Those who knew him well will remember his signature smirk, a subtle expression that often said he already knew how things would turn out.
He had a wide range of interests and hobbies. He enjoyed hunting, coin collecting, billiards, and shooting. He loved cooking and took pride in seed starting, always looking forward to watching things grow. He had a deep appreciation for classic cars and especially cherished time spent with his family, particularly hosting his well-known “work BBQs,” where everyone was welcome and good times were shared.
Above all, Gary was a devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by his children: LeeAnne Borman, Melissa (Joshua) Riesland, and Joseph (Briana) Schultis. He was the proud grandfather to Dakota, Jacob, Jayden, Rylie, and Rylynn. He is also survived by his siblings: Susan (Jim) Trial of Brownwood, TX and Richard (Shari) Schultis of Queen Creek, AZ; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion R. Schultis and Joseph E. Schultis, and his brother, Joseph A. Schultis.
Gary will be remembered for his wisdom, his quiet confidence, his unwavering patriotism, and the love he had for his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 15, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Johnson's Mortuary in Yuma, AZ, where friends and family will gather to say a heartfelt goodbye.
