On October 2, 2011 , Ila V. Wallace, 92, passed on. Ila was the youngest of four children who grew up on the farmlands of Kansas. She learned to do the daily chores and to sew, something she liked very much.
Upon completion of school ( a one room school house) she moved to Kansas City to live with her sister Jeanette where she met and fell in love with Raymond Wallace. They were married on October 3, 1937, and soon began a family. During the Great Depression and World War II, Ila was in charge of the household while Ray worked in a Bomber plant in support of the war effort.
She continued to include sewing in her daily routine and as the family grew Ila made hand sewn shirts for Ray and the boys and developed her skills in making hand made quilts. August 1953 and Ila is on the road from Kansas City to Yuma, Arizona, a dry climate that will be good for Ray's arthritic legs. Ila wanted her sons to have a college education. Ray did most of the work but Ila was the one who saved the money and made sure her sons had a college education.
Until recently Ila made hand made quilts for every birth, graduation and marriage for her family beginning with her sons, Lonnie Ray and Robert Louis and their children totaling seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
