He was the third child of Oscar and Bertha (DeWall) Nelson. At a young age his father moved the family to Yuma, when they started farming land in Somerton and Yuma County. Eventually the family settled in Yuma and built their trailer park on the Third Street. Lyle attended Yuma High School and also working, when he was drafted into the Army and was shipped off to Korea.
After he returned from the Korean War he started working for the B.L.M. as a surveyor. 1954 he married Mary (Martinez) and shortly after started working for the City of Yuma, Fire Department until he retired in 1981 after 27 years as an Engineer. Besides working for the Fire Department he worked as many as 2 or 3 other jobs at different times.
Lyle was a member of the American Legion, Elks and Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He is survived by his brother, Bob (Connie) Nelson, his children, Patricia (Bill Jr) Mendoza, Edward (Stacy) Nelson, Linda (Rick) Candoza. Grandchildren, Mindy Bell, Jason and Will Mendoza, Keith and Blake Nelson. Tyler Walker and Ashley Zane, three great-grandchildren and many nieces, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Bertha, wife, Mary, grandson, Tony Mendoza. His sister, Delores and brother-in-law, Harry Powell. Brothers, Keith and Dwight, sister-in-law, Marie Nelson.
Services will be on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Johnson Mortuary at 10:00 am
The Nelson family is most thankful to Hospice of Yuma for their excellent care of our father. Also his caregivers, Elvira, Celia, Adriana and Maria. Words can not express our appreciation for the care and compassion that you brought to our dad during his illness and up until he passed.
