Ramiro Garza Sr., a proud Marine, gifted musician, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at the age of 93. Born October 1, 1931, in Weslaco, Texas, Ramiro was the third of six children.
Ramiro's life was defined by service, creativity, and love. Drafted during the Korean Conflict, he served as a Medical Corpsman in Austria before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he dedicated nearly two decades of his life. His military service included two tours in Vietnam, and he retired as a Gunnery Sergeant in 1972. Ramiro continued to serve his country with distinction as a U.S. Border Patrol Radio Operator and Supervisory Immigration Inspector, earning numerous awards, including Employee of the Year in 1986.
In 1956, Ramiro married the love of his life, Olivia, after a whirlwind romance that began through letters and a shared love of music. Together, they raised four children: Gracie, Rico, Melissa, and Imelda, each born in a different city during his military assignments. The couple shared 54 beautiful years before Olivia's passing in 2010.
Ramiro's passion for music was unmatched. A self-taught guitarist and songwriter, he penned over 150 songs, some recorded by prominent artists. At home, he entertained his family and neighbors with impromptu performances, humorous Halloween antics, and songs inspired by the people and events around him.
A man of great discipline, Ramiro stayed active well into his later years, walking three miles daily and cherishing time with family and friends. He found joy in collecting guitars, belt buckles, and movies, and he proudly wore his Marine Corps attire.
In his final years, dementia dimmed his memory but not the legacy of love and dedication he leaves behind. Ramiro was a man who served his country, cherished his family, and inspired those around him with his music and humor.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Olivia. Ramiro is survived by his children, Gracie Tinseth, Ramiro Garza Jr. (Rico), Melissa Garza and Imelda Robinson, as well as his extended family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Semper Fi, Ramiro. Your melody plays on.
