Jeffrey Scott Toomey, 62, recently of Pinehurst, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, February 15, after a brief illness. Jeff was born June 7, 1958, in Gastonia, N.C., the eldest child of Richard G. and Nancy Goforth Toomey, Jr. of Greensboro, N.C. Jeff was on the move as a child, growing up in five cities between North Carolina and Florida. This travel experience seemed to carry into his adult life as he followed a teaching career spanning three decades in the golf industry, beginning seriously in Hilton Head and ending at Pinehurst. The two acclaimed golf venues were bookends in a career as a golf club professional and golf instructor. A graduate of East Mecklenburg High School at Charlotte, N,C., Jeff attended St. Andrews and Western Carolina Universities. He also pursued an early career in the Hospitality Industry that took him to resorts in Vail, Co., and to Embassy Suites in Greensboro, among other locations in the South Carolina Lowcountry. In his singular journey through life, Jeff was a loving son, husband, devoted father, friend and valued tutor to hundreds of students. He is survived by his father Richard G. Toomey, Jr.; daughter Alison Annette Toomey of Flemington, N. J.; Alison’s mother Annette Tolbert of Greensboro; fiancé Anne Beck Thompson of Pinehurst; sister Julia MacKenzie of Greenville, N.C.; brothers John R. Toomey and wife Diane of Collegeville, Pa.; Richard G. Toomey III and wife Amanda P. of Greensboro; nieces Suzanne Claytor and husband Andrew Claytor of Richmond, Va.; Blair Mackenzie and Mara Holland Mackenzie of Raleigh, N. C.; Sophia Toomey of Greensboro; and nephews David Toomey and wife Rosy of Jacksonville, Fla. and Michael Mackenzie of Greenville. The family plans a private ceremony in the Columbarium alcove at Jamestown United Methodist Church, Jamestown, N.C., with Rev. David Greene officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or to a favorite Charity.
