I was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 4, 1939 to Julius Ceasar Mitchell and Annie Irene Kelly Mitchell. I lived in the Grant Park area and attended Jerome Jones Elementary School. Then, it was on to Roosevelt High School for 8th thru 12th grade, where I met and still have a great group of friends. I remember the football games, military parades and dances in the gym. Friday and Saturday, it was date night at the Starlight Drive-In, then to Two Points, Tackett's or the Varsity for burgers and fries.
After graduation in 1958, I went to work in the floor covering industry, installing all types of surfaces for many years. The commercial side of flooring took me to military bases, hospitals, schools, churches, theaters, restaurants and hotels in many states. After 58 years, I retired and loved it.
I married my sweetheart, Sherry Martenn, who also attended Roosevelt. We resided in the City of Atlanta and in later years moved to Conyers. We were married for nearly 62 years. We loved and supported each other in everything. We spent every 4th of July watching the fireworks and did so for 61 straight years, only missing one because of a global pandemic. We just enjoyed life. We had three loving sons, Jess (60), Steve (57) and Allan (54). Our family was so proud to have three granddaughters, four great-grandsons, and one great-granddaughter.
We loved having fun and spent our vacations at the beach with family or in the mountains in the fall and winter.
My family and I attended Spring Street Baptist Church in Smyrna, Georgia. I was also a member of the E. A. Minor Masonic Lodge.
I was preceded in death by my parents, Julius Ceasar and Annie Mitchell; brother, James Ralph Mitchell; and sister, Betty Laverne Mitchell McArthur.
Joining me in Heaven one day will be my loving wife, Sherry Martenn Mitchell; sons, Jess Mitchell, Stephen Mitchell and Allan Mitchell; grandchildren, Jessica Nicole Mitchell (Joshua Gravitt), Jennifer Ann Santiago (Elvin Santiago) and Anna Burton; great-grandchildren, Elvin Santiago, III, Victoria Santiago, Beau Gravitt, Mason Gravitt and Carter Gravitt; sister, Margaret Mitchell Patton; brother, William Cecil Mitchell (Andrea Mitchell); the Roosevelt High School Class of 1958; a host of other relatives and family friends.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a walk-thru visitation on Saturday, February 20, 2021 from 5:00PM-7:00PM and Sunday, February 21, 2021 from 12:00Noon-1:00PM at Horis A. Summers of Connection Church, officiating.
