Born January 24, 1929 in Waterbury, CT Son of Donald & Gladys Belcher. They moved to New London CT in 1940. Nate attended local schools and graduated from Bulkeley School in the class of 1947 where he was Vice-President of his class for three years. He was a member of the 1944 Football State Championship team and was co-captain of the 1946 football team. He attended two years at Mitchell College and joined Pfizer in 1949. He served them for 44 years. While at Pfizer, he became an active member of the US Marines Corp. Reserves and served in Guam during part of the Korean conflict. Following his career at Pfizer, he became President of the First New London Savings & Loan Association until they merged with Liberty Bank.
He married Jane Pierce, daughter of Howard & Marion Pierce on January 20, 1951. She passed away in 1979. He married Patricia Smith Logan in 1981.
Nate was a member of the New London Jaycees, a Cub Master in the town of East Lyme where he started with a group of 18 youngsters and grew to a group of over 100 in a period of five years. He served on the East Lyme Board of Education for eight years, serving as President for the last two years. Nate was elected as a trustee of Bulkeley School during the period when the court determined that the funds of the Bulkeley Trust were to be used for scholarships for the students that reside in the City of New London. He became president of the group and was very proud of the fact that his great, great grandfather, Nathan Belcher, was one of the five trustees that started Bulkeley School and was the treasurer as was his great-grandfather, William Belcher, and his grandfather, Nathan who was president of the Bulkeley School Trustees.
Nate also served on the Board of East Lyme Library Foundation and as Director of the Cedar Grove Cemetery Association. He was past president of the Thames Club in New London and served as secretary for ten years. He was an honorary member of the former New London Country Club where he served as secretary for twenty years and President for two years. He was also a member at Black Hall Club, Great Neck Country Club and was also a member of the Connecticut State Seniors Golf Association where he served as tournament chairman for several years.
Aside from golf, he enjoyed playing bridge and bowling. One of his happiest times was when he golfed in the Worlds Pro Am in Scotland and his team came in second in a five day tournament that was played at five different courses where British Open Tournaments were held. He was a NY Yankee fan and faithful fan of UConn woman’s basketball.
He was predeceased by his brothers Donald & David. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his son William (Melodie) Belcher of LaGrange GA, daughter Sherry (Ken) Levine of Scotland and his stepchildren: Susan (Michael Garabedian) Logan, New York NY; Michael Logan, Oregon; Steven (Jean) Logan, Quaker Hill; and Donald (Martha) Logan, Seattle WA. His sisters, Barbara Bellefleur, Florida and Audrey (Calvin) Beck, Northford CT. Also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 10th at 10am at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London.
