On Sunday night January 6, 2019, the world lost one of its brightest stars. Edith Schaffer Lederberg passed away at North Broward Hospital surrounded by loved ones. For over 30 years Edith served as Executive Director of the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Broward County, managing a vast network of resources to provide services to its senior citizens. A beloved member of the community, Edith is one of the foremost experts on senior issues and legislation in the country. Edith served on countless advisory boards, including a stint on the Bosom Buddies committee with Hilary Clinton to inform women of measures to detect breast cancer. Edith was born October 26, 1929, spending her formative years in Freeport, New York. While resources weren't plentiful during her early years, love was abundant in her family. Edith shared special time with her parents, Peter and Fanny, sister Ramona and brother Eugene. Edith shared a very special relationship with her grandmother/mentor Gussie Kramer, who had a profound influence on her future success in the business world. Edith was a star athlete, excelling in field hockey, volleyball, softball and basketball. Edith attended the University of Vermont and Hofstra, graduating with honors, and earning a BS degree in Spanish and a Master's Degree in Education. She taught elementary school for many years in Freeport, New York and later was the Public Relations Director for the Wantagh School District. Edith is survived by sisters Ramona and Eleanor and three children: Carole Cooperman (Mitchell), Peter Lederberg, Joel Lederberg (Norma) and grandchildren Jennifer, Emily (Jon), Arielle (Rich), Aidan and her beloved great-grandchildren Rebecca and Jackson. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday January 9, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. at Star of David Memorial Gardens, 7701 Bailey Rd, N Fort Lauderdale. Burial will be at Mt. Ararat Cemetery in Lindenhurst, NY on Friday January 11, 2019. Donations should be made to the ADRC of Broward County, http://www.adrcbroward.org/ in Edith's honor.
