August 14, 1928 to February 14, 2020
“Joyce” as she was affectionately known, passed away peacefully on February 14th in the Palliative Care Ward at VGH. Born to Reg and Lillian Lister in Edmonton Alberta, she grew up on the campus of University of Alberta with her brother Ron (Betty, daughters Patricia and Shirley) and sister Kay (Hugh, sons Robbie and Alan (Rhonda). Joyce graduated from U of A (B.Sc H.Ec ’48) and did her Dietetic Internship at Toronto General Hospital. She then worked as a dietitian and eventually Head Dietitian at Toronto General Hospital, Calgary General Hospital and finally back at the University of Alberta. It is here that she met her husband of 55 years, David L. McNair (1925 – 2013) who was at that time a dentistry student. Marriage moved Joyce to Vancouver, Dave’s hometown. They had two daughters Carol (Peter, granddaughter Emily) and Dianne (Martin, grandsons Eric (Jenny) and Matthew). Joyce was involved over the years with many activities including Dental Wives Club, St. Mary’s Chancel Guild, University Women’s Club, and she and Dave were founding members of the Arbutus Club. Joyce was an avid bridge player, tennis player and curler. She made many wonderful friends along the way. The family extends their thanks to the many caregivers, nurses and doctors who helped Joyce in the last years of her life. A service will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Kerrisdale on February 29 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Joyce McNair to support the Palliative Care Ambulatory Clinic fund at VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation.
