Born in 1928 at the height of the Great Depression, Mrs Hayes, was born to Peter and Mary (McGrath) King of Moquette Row in Yonkers. Her mother died when Evelyn was 4 and she remained devoted to her father for all his life.
Mrs. Hayes went to Commerce High school and then worked as a dressmaker in the old carpet shop factory. She met her husband in St Joseph’s Parish and they were married in 1950 at St Joseph’s. Her daughter Kathleen was born in 1954 and then a son 16 years later in 1970.
She remained a homemaker for the majority of her life and battled many chronic illnesses. Dedicated to St. Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower, she dedicated hours of prayer to a saint who shared many of her own sufferings.
She is survived by her daughter Kathleen of Yonkers and her son, Michael Jr (Marion), of Cleveland, Ohio. Her husband of 68 years Michael Hayes, Sr., died two years previous to her.
Her family is grateful to her many doctors and to the staff at Andrus on Hudson for their care, especially Liza Wu, who kept her connected to Mike via FaceTime throughout the pandemic.
There will be no wake services because of Covid precautions for family and the Mass of Christian Burial will be held privately along with the burial. Memorial Masses are encouraged to be said for her. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Paulist Fathers at Paulist.org/give in her memory.
