Jean Hubbard made her way in this world with a fiercely independent spirit, a keen intelligence and a true joy for living. She did things her way and did not understand why it should ever be otherwise. Jeanie left us in the evening of December 30, 2020 and our lives are now something less than they were.
Jeanie was born in Amarillo, Texas on May 3, 1938, the second child of G.C. and Evelyn Hubbard. She and her sister, Georgia, grew up in Odessa where she made many life-long friends. Jeanie graduated from Odessa High School in 1956 before enrolling for her freshman year at The University of Colorado. She graduated in 1961 from he University of Houston with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She then Attended The University of Texas where she obtained a master's degree in psychology. After leaving Austin, she made her way to Dallas, a city she loved and where she spent the rest of her life. Her early years in Dallas she spent in the mental health field working at Timberlawn Hospital. The remainder of her career was largely spent in the nascent field of employees benefits. Since 1974, Jeanie lived in a lovely neighborhood near White Rock Lake where she became close friends with so many of her neighbors. Although she gave assisted living a brief shot, she didn't stay long("too many old people"). She was very grateful to spend her last years at home.
Jeanie always had pets. She loved them dearly and cared for them as children. She was active in animal welfare and rescue groups and was known as someone to call if a dog needed a home. Jeanie loved working in her garden and always had a beautifully landscaped yard.
Those she left behind include her sister, Georgia Kelly, her nephews, Mike and Paul Kelly, her niece, India Tucker, her friend Teresa Kelly, great nieces and nephews, Kane Tucker, Kelly Tucker, Patrick Kelly and Shannon Isom and her many dear friends in Dallas. Those leaving before her include her mother and father, G.C. and Evelyn Hubbard, her aunt and uncle, Gene and Lonnie Kelly and her dear friend Janet Skinner.
Our final goodbyes will be said at a private family gathering at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. The family would like to thanks Adeola Etti and the other caregivers at Home Instead in Dallas for their compassionate care of Jeanie. If desired, memorials may be sent to the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, 2400 Lone Star Drive, Dallas, TX 75212
Jeanie would like us to recall the words of the poet Jane Kenyon:
Let it come, as it will, and don't be afraid. God does not leave us comfortless, so let evening come.
