Growing up, some of the best times were Easter Sundays at Grammy and Grandpa’s house. The food, the laughter, the chaos of cousins running around—it was the kind of day that felt magical because it was filled with love and family. This year, I had the joy of hosting Easter in my own home, and it felt incredibly special to be able to serve my grandparents for a change. I didn’t know it would be the last Easter I’d share with Grandpa. I’m so thankful for that day and the full heart it gave me.

One of my favorite memories from childhood is riding in the back of Grandpa’s white truck with Kelsey and Hannah. We’d be bouncing down the road toward the little lake, singing “White Lightning” by George Jones at the top of our lungs—and following it up with “Flowers on the Wall” by Eric Heatherly, like we were headlining our own little concert. Grandpa would be driving, probably grinning—or maybe grimacing—but either way, he let us be wild and loud and free.

In recent years, every time we FaceTimed, he’d light up and call me “Smiley.” It didn’t matter what kind of day he was having—if Cooper popped up on the screen, Grandpa’s whole face would brighten. Those small moments meant the world to me.

And of course, we can’t remember Grandpa without mentioning the hearing aids—which, let’s be honest, mostly just served as very expensive ear decorations. You could talk to him at full volume and he’d still say, “Huh?” But somehow, he always heard the important stuff—especially when it came from the people he loved.

Grandpa had a quiet kind of strength, a dry wit, and a deep love for his family. He taught us through his actions, through the time he gave, and through the warmth of his presence. I’ll miss him deeply—but I’m forever grateful for the memories, the music, the laughter, and the love he left with us.

We love you, Grandpa.

Many fond memories growing up as a neighbor to John and Joe.  Driving the vintage Packard in Fitzwilliams, NH with them. John always had a smile and was forever pleasant.

Dear Cindy, & Family,   It is not easy going through the death of your husband, father, grandfather.  The family sends their thoughts, love & prayers for you all.  I will be thinking of you as you go through this time of grief.  Keep sharing all your memories, you had many years of them together.  Loved all the pictures that were shared.

Whenever I was in New Bern, I tried to visit with John and Cynthia. They were a friendly, loving couple who always welcomed me with a smile and a Yankee..."comment". As John grew quieter in the later years, I missed his "comments" more and more.
Medical issues kept me from visiting more, but John and Cynthia kept in touch and once met up with me during one of their trips to UNC.
I live in NY. now, but miss them both. The world has lost a wonderful man, but we all know he's going somewhere nicer.
