

It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Sandra Leigh Shepherd Kahill, "Mama K", a loving wife, cherished mother, proud grandmother, and beloved member of her community. Sandra passed away peacefully on April 20, surrounded by the love of her family.
Sandra was the heart of her family, a steady source of kindness, wisdom, and unconditional love. As a wife, she shared a beautiful life and enduring partnership with her beloved husband, Jerry Kahill. Together, they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and treasured memories.
Sandra was born on September 7, 1946, to parents Marshall Edward Shepherd and Nellie Rose Frye Shepherd in Longview, North Carolina. Sandra married her forever love, Jerry Kahill on December 21, 1968. Sandra attended Hickory High School and Appalachian State University.
She was a devoted mother to her children, Kerry Kahill (wife Nikki Kahill) of Conover, NC, and Michael Kahill (wife Bethany) of Conover, NC, nurturing them with patience, guidance, and unwavering support. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Brooklin, Abigail, Emma, Connor, Aidan and Liam, whom she was tremendously proud of and who brought her immense joy. As a grandmother, Mama K created lasting memories filled with laughter, stories and love that her grandchildren will carry forever. She was truly one of a kind.
Sandra dedicated her life to education as a teacher. She inspired countless students with her passion for learning, her compassion, and her belief in the potential of every child. Sandra began her teaching career in Gastonia then moved to Hinesville Georgia where she taught English to military families; she ended her career with Caldwell County Schools where she taught elementary grades, ending her career at Happy Valley Elementary. Her impact reached far beyond the classroom and will be felt for generations.
A faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir, Sandra found strength and community in her church. Her faith guided her life, and she was known for her generosity, humility, and service to others.
Sandra was an extraordinary woman whose kindness, generosity, and spirit touched everyone who knew her. She lived with grace, strength and a deep love for others, leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.
She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry; her children, Kerry and Michael; her grandchildren, brother William "Jr" Shepherd and a host of extended family members and dear friends.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at Hickory Funeral Home on Friday, April 24th, 2026. The family will receive family and friends at 1:30pm with funeral services to follow in the Chapel at 3:00pm.
Though she is no longer with us, her love remains a guiding light in the lives she touched.
