I am so heartbroken to learn of Ed’s passing. He was my neighbor just a few doors up, and over the years, we would often stop and talk as I walked to and from work or came home from playing squash, usually with Oliver right there at his side.

Ed always spoke with such pride about his children, and he had a wonderful way of offering words of wisdom and advice, often with his characteristic sense of humor.

One day, when I had been navigating a particularly challenging time, Ed asked how I was doing. He could tell I had a lot on my mind. I told him I was hanging in there, but it seemed like every time I turned around, there was something else to navigate. His response was simple: “Well, that just means you have to turn around.”

Those words stayed with me. They were Ed’s way of reminding me that when times are difficult, sometimes we need to turn around, look at what is around us, and see things from a fresh perspective. A few days later, I was giving a keynote at a large gathering, and I used Ed’s words as the premise of my remarks. His simple piece of wisdom resonated deeply with so many people in the room. I made sure to tell him afterward that his words had traveled well beyond our sidewalk.

I had not seen Ed in the last few weeks, but I had also been traveling. Learning today that he had passed struck me like a load of bricks. I will miss his sense of humor, our random conversations on the sidewalk, seeing him with Oliver, and those wise words that always seemed to come at just the right time.

I feel so fortunate to have known Ed and to have been his neighbor. I am sending my deepest condolences to his family and to all those who loved him. I know I am only one of many people whose lives were made a little richer by knowing him.

His impact in this world will live on, including in the wisdom he shared so generously with those of us lucky enough to cross his path.

I first met Dr. Feller through the journal club discussions he facilitated for 3rd year med students at the Miriam, something he had generously done for years. But after learning that he lived just down the block from me, I quickly came to look forward to our run-ins outside of work. They often turned into long conversations on the street corner, with Oliver happily munching on sticks beside us.

Dr. Feller loved sharing stories from his life, and he took such genuine enthusiasm in helping me and my boyfriend think about our careers, just as he did for so many medical students who expressed an interest in writing, research, or simply exploring where their interests might take them. When he learned about my interest in the intersection of business and medicine, he went out of his way to personally connect me with an alum who had pursued similar interests. That generosity and eagerness to help others was simply part of who he was.

He spoke so fondly of his children, both of whom he was incredibly proud, and I always enjoyed hearing him reminisce about his time in France. Whether I encountered him as a professor or simply as a neighbor, he brought the same warmth, curiosity, and genuine interest in the lives of those around him, and I will miss our unexpected conversations on his front lawn. Dr. Feller left his mark on generations of students and on the broader Providence community, and he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

This is “Bee” / Baratang Stewart, a CNA who got to know this family years ago when I was taking care of his wife - Wendy. He made me feel at home and helped me a lot. I could be open and honest with this family and they cared. Our hearts sunk when we heard the news. We don’t know how to accept his loss but trust God to help us. My children and I, had personal relationships with him & they called him more than I did, lately. We are sorry,; Sophie, Alex, & Oliver, for your loss. Please know that I love you and am here when you need me. “Bee” 🐝. I Will Never Forget you, my buddy.

You were truly amazing and one of the reasons why I am who I am today in medicine. So many students owe their success to you. Thank you for SEEING us!

Dr. Feller was a wonderful friend, and I feel very fortunate to have known him. We first met on campus, when he was walking with Oliver. From that very first meeting, I came to know him as someone who was kind, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive.

He always encouraged me to pursue my dreams and believed in me in ways that meant more to me than he probably ever realized. I will always remember his inspiration, his encouragement, his wisdom, and, of course, his wonderful sense of humor.

I am deeply grateful that our paths crossed, and I will always carry his kindness and encouragement with me. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

I worked with Dr. Feller for many years in conjunction with the marrow donor program at Rhode Island Blood Center. He was an incredible individual and I always loved chatting with him. He did so much good for his students and the community - the ripples of his caring and passion will be felt for many years. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have known him and will never forget him. Thank you for everything, Dr. Feller; we'll miss you so much.

I've known Dr. Feller since 2003 during medical school when he led the clerkship in community health, and then again as an attending after I came back to Brown. We even shared an office for a few months at the medical school which I was so honored by! Dr. Feller was always openhearted, kind, and invested. He made you feel seen and heard, and like you mattered, every time you talked to him. AND he never changed.

His death is a huge loss. I hope those of us who knew him can carry forward what he modeled: student-centered teaching and mentoring that puts the person in front of you first.

He'll be missed but not forgotten.

Dr. Feller will leave a long-lasting legacy of helping people and saving lives. The support he gave to Be The Match/NMDP was incredible and the number of people he encouraged to join this life-saving bone marrow registry will live on for a very long time. Dr. Feller, you will be missed. Sincerely, Ann Evans

Heartfelt condolences to the Feller family. Dr. Feller was the first doctor I saw away from home in college. I will always remember the compassion and respect he showed, giving me confidence I was in excellent hands. The same respect and openness was also evident in his mentoring, ensuring his approach to patient-centered medicine would continue. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy.

My sincere condolences to Edward's children & his Brother Joe.
We attended Adelphi Academy together.
I was at Edward's Bar Mitzvah & graduating class in 1963.
I loved his reading of Casey at the Bat.
And remember his go to for a first date was always The Fantastiks. He saw that show many times. And married a star player.
Edward was always head of his class. A gentle private person. A super basketball player along with his brother, Joe. He & Joe always contributed to a winning team.
Our last conversation was the night before he got Oliver. He was so excited. I'll always think of Edward R.Feller with ❤️ in my heart.

Dr. Feller had a deep impact on me as a mentor; he had a generosity of spirit and curiosity for medicine and literature that was infectious. He had a deep sense of humor, egalitarianism, and care. A true mensch, he had an profound impact on generations of medical students that came through Brown.

Dear Alex and Sophie,
I’m so sorry for your loss. He was a truly great dad.
Love, Holly Hyde

I had the gift of meeting Dr. Feller my freshman year while he was on his nightly walk with Oliver around campus. I stopped to say hi, and he was immediately the warmest. We kept in touch, and ended up working together on a project. His kindness, both personally and professionally, has lifted me up on days when I have felt discouraged. I've talked to so many people who've all known him as the kind man who walks around campus with his dog and stops to talk to everybody, leaving their day better and brighter. He genuinely cares about his family and friends, and he would always remember every update in my life, asking me about it. Dr. Feller made everyone around him feel cared for, and he touched so many lives. His legacy will live on in the people he mentored and befriended. He will always be remembered.

I only had the gift of meeting Dr. Feller over zoom. I had reached out as he was willing to mentor my summer research project this year, yet I reached out right after the tragic shootings at Brown. When he met, he was just so supportive and helpful during a very stressful and upsetting time.

In my very short time of knowing him, his feedback was honest and challenging. While I am deeply upset that I will not have the opportunity to receive his mentorship and guidance, I can only imagine the impact he has had on students' lives. I am very sorry for your loss, and I hope it brings comfort knowing he led a such a meaningful life.

May his memory be a blessing.

Dear Alex and Sophie,
The world has lost a tremendous man...a kind, gentle, ferociously protective of students and most of all his children.
I remember meeting Dr. Ed Feller as he stalked the corridors of Pawtucket Memorial Hospital as a GI attending, caring for those late night emergencies. He was always available; willing to teach, share a story or make sure the residents were okay.
During my tenure at Brown, we shared teaching, advising, lunches and of course, good stories. He loved to know "everything" and usually had a head start on all the news about the students. The energy to teach, mentor and advise was always palpable.
Ed was SO proud of both of you. He would start every lunch by regaling me about your Mom and what the two of them were doing, then tell me about his latest "running" ups and downs, and then, finally, rapidly include updates on Alex and Sophie.
Please accept my deepest condolences. May the memories of shared good times sustain you as you grieve his loss...but Ed Feller will always live in my heart and in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched. Hopefully, he will live on in yours as well.
Warmly, Juli (Julianne Ip)

Ed was a mentor and friend of mine for many years. He was brilliant, thoughtful, kind, and loved medical students, residents and probably everyone else who was privileged enough to know him.
I recall all the miles we ran together for many years. I looked forward to each stride we took together and the discussions that we had that made the miles fly by effortlessly. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to be touched by the presence of a true MENSCH!

My husband and I met Ed while walking our respective dogs, Kai and Oliver. He was a total sweetheart, intelligent and caring, and we quickly became friends. We worried about him as he was feeling faint and having trouble walking, but he told us he was seeing a doctor and a trainer. Ken and I just saw him a few days ago and we are so sorry to hear of his passing.

He was a special man and his contributions, both in medicine and in life, will be remembered long after his passing.

Dear Sophia & Alex

My sincerest condolences to you and your family are at the loss of your father.
It has been my honor and pleasure to have been able to work and help Dr . Feller in his last years of life.
Parents are so precious and will always be remembered for the good times and all the opportunities they afforded you during your growth and development.
There will always be a part of them you will always possess.
I send prayers that you feel peace in the memories of times past, and may those memories bring you joy at times when your heart feels heavy from this loss.
Rest in peace, Dr. Feller.
Sincerely,
Lucrecia

Dr Feller saved my life in 1985 when I was a 33 year old nursing student and after seeing 5 doctors. noone could find the answer to the pain I was having Thus through his diligence he found I had a liver tumor and i went to mass general, had surgery and pursued my nursing degree. If it wasnt for him I wouldn't be here. His bedside manner and expertise and dedication was second to none. He treated his patients like people not just like a symptom or a chart. I will never forget him Sincere condolences to his family

Dear Alex & Sophie, I met your mom back in 1977, when she and I were working at Providence Center shortly after we had both received our Master's in Social Work degrees from Boston College. Through her, I met your dad and both of you. Your dad was very highly regarded within the Rhode Island Medical community; he was noted for his accessibility, his competent and sensitive approach to patient care and his kindness. I will hold both your Mom & Dad in my heart. My sincere condolences to you both.

I met Ed nearly 40 years ago when we were volunteers for Special Olympics. He struck me then as a warm, generous, gently humorous guy who was very easy to like because he made everyone feel so comfortable. My young sister was thinking of med school and Ed became her mentor and later business partner. All the while he and i stayed connected through a variety of community service experiences. In all of our intersections, he was the same warm, gentle, generous guy. He also impressed me with the loved he expressed and demonstrated for his family, seeing them as distinct individuals while caring so deeply about their happiness. A good and kind soul who will always be with me.

Ed Feller was my friend and mentor since I started my Internal Medicine residency at The Miriam Hospital many years ago. We used to run together at times (not that I ever matched his long distance passion) and I became friends with him and Wendy, oftentimes going to her plays. He was a wonderful person. I will miss him and want to express my sincere condolences to his children and extended family.

I will never forget Dr. Feller’s generosity of time and dedication to his students. He spent hours with us during journal club at Miriam Hospital during our internal medicine rotation in 3rd year. He took our entire cohort out to dinner! He was a mentor to so many and will be greatly missed.

I first met Dr. Feller some sunny afternoon on Brown’s campus when I was an undergrad. He was taking Oliver on a walk, and it was so clear the warmth and joy Dr. Feller had towards others and I feel like this really manifested in Oliver’s energy too—a boundless supply of joy. I met Dr. Feller again my first year of medical school, and he helped give me some direction with research, connecting me with the colleagues and friends he had built throughout his time at Brown. I asked him how he became a research mentor at the medical school, and he said he felt that he knew that if he did not mentor students and give back to the medical community in this lifetime, he would have felt unfulfilled. This speaks volumes to his character, and his commitment to students was felt deeply. Dr. Feller was such a kind, thoughtful, and compassionate mentor, and he will be so very missed by all the students who had the privilege of meeting him.

Dr Feller was an amazing mentor - I had recently lost my father when I was a med student, and he was such a wonderful and supportive friend. Love to all of his family - may he rest in peace ❤️🙏🏼

The amazing Dr Feller came to our 10th reunion in 2015 and walked with us despite having an orthopedic boot at the time. You will be missed ❤️
