Philip "Phil" Albins was born on April 30, 1921 to Dimitri John “DJ” Albins and Grace O. Albins. The family, including Philip’s brothers Vladimir and Feodor, moved to the hamlet of Cañon in 1928. The Albins family quickly became an integral part of the community that eventually became known as Black Canyon City. DJ was a very successful farmer while his wife, Grace, taught at the local school. In 1942, Philip enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served his country in the China-Burma-India campaign of World War II. Philip and Era Jeane Heffington met in a tomato packing plant in Merced, California in 1944; they were married in 1946. Philip and Jeane then moved to Phoenix, where Philip spent a short time working as a mechanic and Jeane worked in a bakery. Philip soon landed a job with Farmer’s Insurance Company where, during his first year on the job, he became Farmer’s number one salesman. The industrious couple built a successful, independent insurance business and began investing in real estate in 1948. They had two children, a daughter, Phyllis, born in 1949 and a son, David born in 1950. Throughout his life, Philip was a hardworking and successful citizen devoted to his family and his community. The Albins have been instrumental in the development of Black Canyon City. They have gifted property to many of the town’s entities including the Civic Center, Medical Center, Fire Department, Community Library, VFW Hall, Cañon School District, Grace Lutheran and Community Church, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, Water Company and Heritage Park. For much of his lifetime, Philip was a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Through their support, he enjoyed over 53 years of sobriety and was also able to give back by helping countless others to live fuller lives.Philip passed away peacefully on October 26, 2009. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, DJ and Grace, his brothers Vladimir and Feodor, and his daughter Phyllis. He is survived by his wife Jeane, his son David, his grandchildren Jacie, Mark, and Karen and his great-grandchild Madelyn.
