Ronald D. Aliano, 65, of Norwich, passed away on October 31, 2009, with his family by his side.He was born on August 18, 1944 in Bristol, Connecticut, the son of John and Louise Aliano. After graduating from Bristol Central High School Ron went on to earn his BA at Central Connecticut State University and returned to Bristol Central High School as an English teacher. Ron also earned a Master’s degree and was awarded an honorary Doctorate from the University of Connecticut.In 1972 Ron became a Norwich resident. That same year, out of a strong desire to provide excellent patient care for the residents of Eastern Connecticut, Ron founded Professional Ambulance Service of Norwich, Inc., now known as American Ambulance Service, Inc. Fourteen years later Ron formed the American Wharf Development Corporation. This corporation was responsible for the development of Hollyhock Island, a parcel of land at the head of the Thames River, which is now known as the Marina at American Wharf, a world-class boating facility. In 1996 American Professional Education Services was formed and it has become the largest American Heart Association training center in New England and it is also a well-respected medical training center. Connecticut Ambulance Billing Service evolved in 1998 from American Ambulance Service, Inc’s billing department. Ron’s most recent start-up was in 2001 with the formation of MACARA Vehicle Services, a full service auto center. Extremely active in civic affairs, over the years Ron served in various capacities on the Norwich Community Development Corporation, Norwich Harbor Management Commission, Board of Directors of the Eliza Huntington Home, Integrated Day Charter School Foundation, State of Connecticut Harbor Management Association, Norwich Area Chamber of Commerce, Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce, Eastern Connecticut Emergency Medical Services Council and the Connecticut Advisory Commission on Emergency Medical Services.Ron was also instrumental in forming the Norwich 4th of July Committee which returned Independence Day Fireworks to Norwich Harbor.Additionally Ron has been the recipient of numerous awards over the years including the 1988 Norwich Citizen of the Year, 1988 UCONN Alumni Distinguished Citizen, 2000 Connecticut Business Ethics Awards, 2001 Merit Award for Public Education Eastern Connecticut EMS Council, 2002 Outstanding Leadership Award CT Rivers Council Boy Scouts of America, 2005 Italian of the Year Award and the 2007 Three Rivers Foundation honoree.Ron is survived by his wife, Valerie; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Terry Aliano of Norwich and their children, Dustin, Cassibella and Giovanni; his daughter and son-in-law, Ronda and Patrick Quinn of Chicago, IL and their children, Maxwell and Charlie; his stepchildren, Natasha and Travis Senokosoff of Las Vegas, NV; his brother and sister-in-law Benedict (Dick) and Dulcina Aliano of Anthem, AZ and their daughter Jennifer Mayr of New Jersey. Also left to cherish his memory are mother-in-law Marguerite Vachon of Norwich, and a host of other relatives, friends, and employees who will miss him greatly.The funeral will assemble at Church & Allen Funeral Home on November 5, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. and proceed for a mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of St. Patrick, 213 Broadway, Norwich, CT at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
