

Edla Augusta Orwick Edla Augusta Orwick, 98, of Rainycrest Long Term Care, formerly of 1301 Elizabeth St. E., Fort Frances, Ontario, passed away peacefully at her residence on Thursday, December 17, 2009. She was born on August 19, 1911 in Tovell McCrosson Township, Ontario to the late John and Anna Larson. In 1932 she married Maurits Carlson and together they raised their two children. In 1939 they moved to Bergland, Ontario where they lived and the children attended school. After the death of her husband Maurits in 1948, Edla moved to Fort Frances, Ontario. It was during this time that she went back to work cooking. She worked at several tourist and logging camps, including John Stewart Logging, Domtar Timber Co., and the Canadian National Railways over the years. During her cooking career she met all types of people who were very interesting and provided many funny moments. She retired in 1975 and had lived a very active life since. Edla enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and handiwork often providing, afghans, mittens, and slippers to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also made many patchwork quilts that she gave to her family. Edla also had a love for the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. In 1999 at the age of eighty-seven, she caught a northern pike on Rainy Lake which weighed in at over fourteen pounds. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch 29 in Fort Frances and had recently received her forty-five year membership pin. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1338. She was predeceased by her father John Larson on November 24, 1945, mother Anna Larson on July 25, 1971, husband Maurits Carlson on July 28, 1948; daughter-in-law Shirley Carlson on January 18, 1984; three sisters Ellen Silver, Nadine Nelson, Ada Pott, and nine brothers Isidorus, Ralph, Alphonse, Elof, John, Victor, Walter, Bruce, and Lester Larson. Edla is survived by son Ken Carlson of Fort Frances, ON.; daughter Arlene and husband William Lamb of Fort Frances, ON. six grandchildren Sharlene Lamb(John), Bill Lamb Jr.(Tammy), Shelley White(Peter), Kari Shine(Larry), Brad Carlson(Janice), and Cheryl Boon(Richard), eleven great grandchildren Christina Lamb-Fisher(Ian), Tim Lamb(Erin), Scott Lamb, Jeffery White, Joshua Shine, Ashley Shine, Jonathan Carlson, Courtney Carlson, Jason Boon, Jennifer Boon, and Amanda Boon, three great great grandchildren Chloe Lamb, Gavin Aylward, Kingston Aylward, and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service was held at Fort Frances Cemetery in Fort Frances, Ontario on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 12 p.m. with Reverend Barbara Miller officiating.
