Hattie Davis died at home on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, after a lengthy illness. Hattie was born in Llano County, Texas and moved to Austin as an infant. She married Tom H. Davis in 1949, and they were married for 56 years, until his death in 2005. Hattie was a strong and outspoken woman, who did not hesitate to let family, friend, or stranger know if she disapproved of something. She was fiercely protective of her family and friends, and she always had a soft spot for strays – whether animals or children. When they where growing up, she took many of her sons’ friends under her wing, at times serving as a substitute or auxiliary parent although that protective cloak did not come with an exemption from the strong expression of her disapproval when she thought it appropriate.Hattie’s friends were also an important part of her life. When their children were elementary school age, Hattie and a group of these friends founded a social club in which they regularly enjoyed each other’s company and engaged in favored pastimes. This group of friends were very special to Hattie and long after her illness took away her ability to actively participate, she looked forward to opportunities to get together with them.Hattie is survived by: her son, Don W. Davis, and wife, Debbie; her son, Mike Davis, and wife Susan; and her grandson, Ty Davis. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Sandra Trevino, Hope Barrera, and Crystal Vallejo for the loving care, comfort, and support they provided Hattie over the last two years. The family will receive friends for visitation at Cook-Walden Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2009. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Oakwood Annex Cemetery. For those wishing to do so, memorial contributions may be made to the Austin Settlement Home, the Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.
