
Phoebe Livingston Shay was born August 26, 1920. She passed away May 5, 2011 at the age of 90. Phoebe was born to Theodore Brooks Livingston and Emily (Feller) Livingston in Glenwood, Washington. Her identical twin, Phyllis Livingston Hanson, passed away in 2004.
Phoebe graduated from Central Washington University with degrees in textiles and design and education.
In 1945, she came to Port Angeles, where she accepted a teaching position with the Port Angeles School District. Teaching was Phoebe's passion, and she worked as an educator for 33 years before retiring in 1981.
On March 22, 1947, Phoebe married Elmer "Bud" Shay in Port Angeles. They were married for 57 years before Bud's death in 2003. They had three children: Susan (Greg) Anderson of Port Angeles, Michael (Glennie Burrage) Shay of Port Angeles and Sally (Thomas) McVaugh of Lacey. She has seven grandchildren and 8.5 great-grandchildren.
Phoebe was a gifted seamstress and pianist. She was an avid reader and baker. She loved dogs and children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bud and Phoebe made several extended trips throughout Europe, where they made many new friends from around the world. For the last few years, Phoebe lived at Laurel Park assisted Living, where her life was enriched by the love and care of staff and residents. They were her extended family.
