Craig... Thank you for the many wonderful years of music I was able to enjoy while you played with my grandpa. From the countless Jams to the endless shows you were always there and that dobro always sounded great! My you rest easy and I am sure Papa, David, and hank are ready for that Dobro as I am sure you all are now picking and grinning together again.

My condolences to the family. Craig was a part of our Civil Rights family at VDOT. I will miss him and his smile. I could always count on him to steer me in the right direction.

I met Craig shortly after I moved to Richmond 30 years ago. There wasn't a day that passed whenever I saw him when he didn't shake my hand, offer a smile and sincerely asked how I was doing. Craig was a gentleman and extremely helpful whenever needed which is unfortunately a rare breed in these days. I will miss him and I don't think I'll ever forget my friend.

I met Craig several times when he played with Amy Ladd and Friends at New Bethesda and he was always the gentleman.  His smile and friendly outgoing personality was wonderful. You could tell he loved his family and playing music - and that he loved Jesus.  May he rest in peace in that eternal home - that house not made with hands in the heavens.  God bless.

I am surely going to miss my Craig. Such a great friend. Craig parked beside of me at VDOT and we would have a lot of conversation about him and his family and his retirement. He wanted to keep on working. He told me that as long as I can put one foot in front of the other, I will get up and come and see my friends at VDOT. He was amazing. I will never forget him. And his smile and determination. God has a new Angel, you will be missed by so many my friend. All of us at VDOT will miss him so much. Prayers go to the family, RIP my friend until we meet again

Dear Wingfield Family, I met Mr. Craig back n 2009 when I started an internship with VDOT. Mr. Craig became one of my mentors and always had something to teach or something funny to say. Mr. Craig was like a grandfather to me and we built a great work relationship. Being former military (Marine), Mr. Craig would bring me Marine Corps stickers that he received in the mail. If he didn't see me, he kept them until the next time and would load me up, saying "I thought about you and thought you would like these". Mr. Craig was a pleasant and great role model to have. His work ethic was commendable and he showed me some projects that he worked on, including the MLK bridge he helped engineer as a former City Engineer. Mr. Craig was very knowledgeable to his job and could calculate things like only an "engineer" could. I remember him playing the Dobro, even though I had never heard of one. He explained what the resonator guitar was and why it was his favorite instrument. When he was hurt in the accident, the VDOT team went to visit him in the hospital and the rehabilitation center, where he was ready to come back to work and still issuing orders regarding his projects. Mr. Craig will be truly missed and we know that he's now in a better place. Mr. Craig, I'm glad it was a privilege and honor to have met you as I've learned mostly the Richmond history from you. You can never be replaced and your vacant chair will always be a reminder that we cannot take life for granted. God can choose to take us at anytime and we have to stay ready. I am sorry to learn of Craig's passing. I worked with him for many years at VDOT and know of his kind and gentle manner. He loved playing music and his family. I hope your loving memories of your father will help sustain you during this difficult time.

Thank you all for the posts that we have received so far. My dad was such a wonderful man and he was very loved. His death left a huge hole in my heart. Although we had issues over the years over his music, we came to be very close and going out to dinner every Thursday night. My dad loved life and it was not until he was hit by the car did he realize how important life and family was. We moved away and we were not always able to see him, but he love his grand children very much. He was my best friend and I am very proud to have called him my father. He stuck by me when others would not and now he is with his beloved wife Joan. There were a great pair together and I know he loved her very much. He never really showed a lot of emotion as he was a very private and secluded man. He loved his Jesus and playing music. We look forward to seeing all of his friends from over the years. Some of you I will not know, but my Dad will know you as he watches over from heaven. Right now I am in shock as well as my family is over the loss. Please pray for all of us as we go through this very rough and unpredictable time.

Sorry to hear of Craig's passing, I have known him and enjoyed his dobro playing so much! My condolences to his Son, David and his Family.

Please pray for my family. Thursday I was called by the police to come to my Step Fathers house as he had died. Don't really think of him that way as he has been a part of my life for about 45 years and the only father I've had other than the Lord for many years. Thankfully even though I was dealing with making funeral home pickup arrangements for his physical body due to a pretty cool story I know the he is in heaven because to be absent form the body is to be present with the Lord. Interestingly enough I know he is in heaven because of an event that occurred when Lisa McCoy of ESI gave us some tickets to a Nascar race years ago. We never were able to find each other that day and he didn't have a cell phone so he decided to walk to his car that was parked miles away and on the way he was struck and almost killed by a car. He spent months in the hospital and rehabilitation centers and then even lived with me and my family for a while. I was always worried that he blamed me for that accident until a little more than a year ago when he told me that he was actually thankful for that whole evening because it brought him back to the Lord and he has had a loving relationship with the Lord ever since then. And amazingly Lisa and ESI never forgot that incident and invited my stepfather and I to an event a couple of years ago at the coliseum and then again last September Lisa reached out to me and asked me if my stepfather and I would finally like to make it to that Nascar race. We made it and it was one of our favorite memories together. I've never been much of a Nascar fan but sharing time with someone you love and seeing their joy is an incredible thing! Thank you Lisa for providing me with an AWESOME memory! September 12 2015 we made it to the race together! Miss you Craig! Love you!

We will miss you brother. I still recall the duets we sang as the "Bent Mountain Boys" back in the late 50's. You're now in a better place, where  we'll all meet again some day. RIP

Your chair is vacant and your voice is silent.  I already miss your so familiar "good morning breakfast clubbers" greeting as you walk in and get started on the projects that you were so passionate about.  There are probably only a few persons outside of our VDOT family that know how much your work impacted and benefited all Virginians, and I'll do my best to maintain and pass on the standards of quality that you taught to me.  Our hearts are sad and heavy but we'll be playing your music here while you're playing with some of the other great musicians and angels that were waiting for you in heaven.  Goodbye friend...may you rest peacefully in God's arms.
