Carol was the first child born to Henry and Mary Quiring. She grew up on farms in Dalmeny and Hepburn Saskatchewan. Carol grew up and learned to know some of her great-grandparents and grandparents who were Christ followers and prayed with their families. Carol heard many Bible stories read by her parents and was taught to pray and trust God. With the help of her mother, Carol invited Jesus into her heart on Christmas Eve when she was 10 years old. Following Jesus was not easy in her early years but with the example of some older teens at church Carol matured and was baptized. Carol enjoyed singing and playing the piano (mostly by ear). During these years the verse “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding but in all your ways acknowledge Him and he will direct your ways,” became especially important to Carol.
Carol met her husband to be at Jr. choir and church. They were also neighbors and their families visited one another and they played table games in the kitchen with their siblings. She remembered the flutter of her heart as she met eyes with George going up the stairs to choir practice. It wasn’t long before George and Carol shared rides in a one horse open and closed sleigh, buggy, bobsled and the car. They often went for walks. They were married on August 11, 1950. Their love blossomed and deepened over 66 years until the time of George’s death in 2017.
Their first child Marjorie was born in February of 1952. Their second child, Judith was born in January of 1955, followed by Ken in March of 1959 and Gerry in June of 1960. When Carol married George, she thought she was going to be a farmer’s wife but God had other plans and they were called into ministry. Carol had been to Bethany Bible Institute and together they went to Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg. From there they became a pastoral couple. They led churches in Regina, Saskatoon, Burnaby, Saanich, Morden and finally Lethbridge. Transitions from one church to anther took place with George and Carol seeking God’s will together in prayer. They never left a church struggling and always resigned at God’s direction and then waited for God to call them to a new ministry. Carol was not a silent partner in ministry but an active participant in pre-marital counseling, Bible studies, teaching Sunday School and she had the gift of hospitality…often stretching a meal for six to serve 8 or ten or more. She also served on the Canadian Conference Board of Evangelism. During the years of ministry Carol was a constant support to George, but she also learned the discipline of keeping a Spiritual Journal in which she shared her joys, concerns and grew deep in her relationship with her Lord. She often talked about the conversations she would have with Jesus as though he was sitting next to her listening and teaching over a cup of coffee.
George’s mother was a prayer warrior and each night she would pray for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren by name. When she died, George and Carol took on the responsibility of continuing to pray for their siblings, nieces and nephews and their children. This was a blessing to the families and to them as they stayed connected. Carol continued to do this after George died until her mind was no longer able to manage.
Carol’s life was not easy, this is true for every pastoral couple, but she enjoyed 66 years of marriage to George, she loved to visit with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. When Covid 19 hit in 2020 Carol was having some health issues which resulted in the isolation of quarantine numerous times. This was hard on her mentally and emotionally. She spent the last two years of her life in a couple of care facilities and was visited as often as was permitted during Covid by her children Marj and Harv and her sister-in-law Helen. Caroline was given compassionate care by the Menno Home where she graduated from this life to a face to face celebration in heaven with her Lord Jesus last Saturday, July 23, 2022.
Carol leaves the legacy of her faith in God, her love of the church and her family to her children: Marjorie & Harvey Kliever, Judith Braun, Ken & Debbie Braun, Ella Braun, grandchildren Jeremy and Jacki Kliever, Robyn Borne, Michael and Natalie Boldt, Darryl and Leah Boldt, Candice and Ryan Healey, Jason and Tiffany Braun, Josh and Marise Braun and Teri Braun, great grand-children , Jackson, Aiden, Elijah, Micah, Samuel, Ben, Eli, Jocelyn, Naomi, Alyse, Claire, Max and Beckham. She also leaves her brother Marvin (Val) Quiring, sister Marilyn (Don) Riekman, sister-in-law Ruth Quiring, brother-in-law Hugh Savage and her nieces and nephews. Carol was preceded in death by her husband George, her son Gerald (Gerry), a still-born son, her parents, her sister Ethel and her brother Arthur.
