When Dorothy was 6 her parents moved the family to BC. The family eventually moved to the Fraser Valley in 1944. Dorothy attended Phillip Sheffield High School, where she played basketball and softball.
When she finished school she worked in the country store out in Sumas Prairie owned by Babe and Alma Pastro. While working at the store she met her husband Gene and they were married in 1950. After they were married they lived with Gene’s parents on the family farm and eventually moved to their own house on Vye Rd in Abbotsford, where they raised their 6 children.
Dorothy loved to bake cakes, sweets, and bread. She also loved to sew clothes for herself and her daughters as well as canning of fruits and vegetables from their huge garden. Everyone knew they could show up at Gene and Dorothy’s and there would be food on the table.
Dorothy and Gene loved to watch all their kids play softball, and would travel anywhere to watch them. Playing cards was another favourite pastime - many good games of Bestia game were played at their place. They loved visiting with family and the many friends they made over the years of being farmers in Sumas Prairie. Dorothy loved softball, Blue Jays baseball, curling, but literally was a fanatic for all hockey and especially the Vancouver Canucks. She even bought season tickets in the 80’s at the Pacific Coliseum.
Dorothy and Gene celebrated their 25 wedding anniversary in 1975.
In 1980 they went on a trip of a lifetime to Italy and Switzerland with Bert & Renatta Ferraro and Gino & Shirley Conte.
In 1983 Gene would get sick, eventually passing away in 1984 of pancreatic cancer. Dorothy continued to live on Vye Rd. until 1988, when she would move to Abbotsford. She spent her time playing bridge with her best friend Lena Kwak 5 to 6 times a week. She also loved jigsaw puzzles.
She took trips with her friends to New Zealand and Australia, Costa Rica and to Reno a number of times.
She then downsized and moved to a place on Garibaldi Dr. in Abbotsford. She remained there until her move into Trillium Care Home where she lived until her death from complications of Alzheimer’s.
Dorothy is survived by her 6 children: Darleen Baker, Leo Ferraro, Debra Dickie, husband Glen Roy Ferraro, wife Lynda Stan Ferraro, partner Fay Anne Schroeder, husband Ken.
