Helen Loewen was born on September 14,1924 in Alexanderwohl, Molotschna, South Russa, the only child of her parents, Jacob and Liese (Sukkau) Loewen. In 1926 Helen arrived in Canada at the age of two. Her family settled for a time in Coaldale, Alberta. Then in 1939, at the age of 14, Helen and her parents resettled in Yarrow BC. At the age of 18 she was baptized upon confession of her faith in Christ and joined the Yarrow MB Church.
Her working career spanned 27 years with MCC. With a sense of confidence and bearing she supervised the workers who volunteered their many hours of service.
She told a story of her dear friends the Epp sisters. Their father, a minister in the Coaldale MB church, was injured and died following a church building construction accident. Mrs. Epp and her daughters then moved to Yarrow, grew up with Helen as sisters and continued their close friendship with Helen. In later years, Helen saw the Epp sisters move to Vancouver and branch out into new lives far from Yarrow. One regret Helen mentioned is that she did not leave Yarrow with them and join them in their adventures in Vancouver. She eventually outlived all of them and dearly missed her monthly calls to them.
Outliving many people became a familiar experience for her at Menno Place. She outlived many roommates that she had come to know as new friends. She always took an interest in their lives and personal stories, and felt the loss personally whey they died.
After her father passed away, Helen and her mom moved to a home in Abbotsford. Her mom then moved into Menno Place when her health declined. Helen then moved into a Condo at Royal Court. For the years that her mom remained at Menno Place Helen visited her faithfully assisting with her care.
Helen’s father, Jacob J. Loewen, predeceased her on August 14th, 1963 and her mother Elizabeth, in August of 1990. On January 30, 2021, in her 96th year, departed from us and went on to be with her Savior and loved ones.
