With great sadness our family announces the passing of Howard Engebretson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Howard passed away peacefully, with family by his side in Abbotsford on March 13, 2025, at age 86.
Born on March 27, 1938, in Fairview, Alberta, Howard’s life was shaped by his passion for farming and his love for the land. At just 11 years old, he owned his first mink at Lesser Slave Lake—a small moment that would grow into a lifelong pursuit. Working alongside his father, he raised mink in Slave Lake, learning the values of perseverance and craftsmanship that produced high quality pelts.
In 1964, Howard and his wife, Gladys, made the bold move to Aldergrove, where they built not just a home, but a legacy. Together, they worked tirelessly to grow their ranch, eventually raising around 6,000 females.
Howard was never just about work. In 1968, he earned his private pilot’s license, and the sky became another place where he found joy and freedom. He took great pride in flying his own plane and was deeply involved in the Abbotsford International Airshow for many years, sharing his love of aviation with those around him.
He loved going to mink auctions and trade shows, where he formed bonds with new friends and reconnected with old ones. He had a presence that filled a room—his larger-than-life personality and unmistakable charm made him someone you never forgot once you met him.
Even after retiring in 1998, Howard’s passion for farming never faded. He continued to lend his knowledge and helping hands to his sons and their families as they carried on the legacy, he had worked so hard to build.
He married Shirley Coutts in 2004 and they resided in Abbotsford where they enjoyed many years of being a ‘snowbird’ in the RV and travelling around meeting new friends.
Howard was predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Ruth, 2 sisters, Joan Sing & Judy Fleck. He leaves behind his sister Betty Sorenson and a loving family who will cherish his memory forever. His sons, Lyall (Darcie) and Terry (Wendy), and his daughter, Turina (Peter), were his pride and joy. He was a grandfather to eight grandchildren: Sarah (Matt), Jenni, Russell, Megan (Nathan), Bryce (Leanne), Kara (Kees), Patric and Nicholas. His legacy continues through his twelve great-grandchildren: Mattias, Brielle, Parker, Rockland, William, Jack, Hank, Wyatt, Sawyer, Briar, Ellie, and Sullivan. He will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
The family would like to thank the wonderful, caring staff at Bevan Village. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity.
