Johanne Lee Runge, affectionately known as Lee, passed away on August 18, 2024. Born on February 17, 1934, in Erie, PA, Lee grew up in Amsterdam, NY. She began her higher education at Buffalo State University on a full scholarship, where she pursued art education. In her sophomore year, she transferred to Houghton College, where she met and later married Albert Runge on August 8, 1953. Their union, which lasted 69 years, was a testament to Lee’s unwavering support and faithfulness. Together, they traveled extensively and served in ministry, leading many to the Lord.
Lee was known for her vibrant love of art and music. She spent countless hours playing her keyboard, painting, and delighting in the simple joy of humming or whistling while puttering in the kitchen. Her mornings began early with prayer, journaling, and reading God’s word—a practice she maintained throughout her life.
In her later years, Lee reignited her passion for music, composing new choruses and waking in the night with songs inspired by her faith. Even in her final days, she was known for singing hymns with her hands raised in worship, embodying her lifelong devotion to God.
Lee is survived by her children: Robin (Gene) Martens (who passed away the day after her, reuniting with her in heaven), David (Sara) Runge, Peter (Wendy) Runge, and Sharon (Brian) Unger. Her legacy also includes her beloved grandchildren Mary (Luke) Afeman, Stephen (Penny) FitzMaurice, Rachel (Westley) Schlundt, Theressa (Rusty) Clark, Josette (Scott) Tukuloff, Alana (Jordan) Grasley, Caitlin (Kelvin) Siemens, Makenna (Ryan) Schmidt, Rebecca Krayenhoff, Rachel Krayenhoff, and Marie Krayenhoff, as well as 12 great-grandchildren. Each family member has been profoundly touched by Lee’s faithfulness, her prayers, and the unwavering support she provided throughout their lives.
Lee’s life purpose was encapsulated in her statement: “I seek to glorify God by seeking to stay in tune with Him daily, and by encouraging and enabling people worldwide to become on-purpose people for God’s glory.” Her life was a reflection of this purpose, and her legacy of faith, love, and encouragement will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
