It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Walter (Juergen) Freybe. On December 8, 2022 Walter passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones at the age of 97. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Vern (Vernell) Freybe, his son Robert (Toots), and daughters Gladys (Michael) and Andrea (David). He was also a wonderful Opa to many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Walter was born in Stettin Germany on April 4, 1925. Following in the footsteps of the generations of Freybe’s before him - Walter studied and became a Master Butcher. Shortly after, he served in World War 2 where he suffered a severe injury, lost his family home and most devastatingly, his mother. In 1952 Walter immigrated to Saskatoon Canada, where he met the love of his life Vern and her “beautiful legs”. They were married in 1954, and began the adventure of a lifetime when they moved to Vancouver on their honeymoon. He later wrote to his family to tell them about the beauty of Canada and the many opportunities here. He encouraged them to join him and was proud to sponsor his brother Ulrich, sister Ilse and their families with their immigration to Canada.
In 1955, Walter and his brother Ulrich restarted Freybe Sausage and together built a very successful business. In the 60’s Walter made the decision to leave Freybe Sausage and open a string of retail stores (Freybe Delicatessen), as well as other prosperous businesses. He was a true entrepreneur, full of energy and always looking for new ideas and opportunities. Walter was tireless and worked well into his 90’s, thankfully completing his memoir “Genes, Guts and Glück”.
He loved spending time with family, travelling with his brother Guenter and sister in law Traute, sailing, walking, researching and trying new recipes. Walter (Opa) was a shoulder, a steady (sometimes stern) voice of reason, a persistent cheerleader, a true gentleman and a fantastic walking buddy. Always learning, creating, developing, and discovering. He approached everyday with infinite curiosity, determination and resilience.
His thirst for knowledge, innovation and adventure was greatly displayed in his zest for life. Highly respected and regarded for his brilliance and quiet kindness, he was able to inspire so many over his 97 years.
Walter was the truest example of a life well lived. We are incredibly thankful for the many years we had with him. He will be greatly missed.
We would like to express our deep appreciation and thanks to the staff of the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission, BC for their excellent care and support to Walter and our family.
As a family, we find great comfort in hearing memories you have of our father/grandfather. Please feel free to leave any stories in the comments.
