It’s taken me a long time to find the right words — even now, it still doesn’t feel real that he’s gone. My dad, Richard Douglas Barton, known to so many as “Otis,” passed away in 2021 at the age of 69 — fittingly, his favorite number. It feels right somehow for a man who lived life fully, fearlessly, and always in his own way.
Dad was born in Vancouver, BC, and spent most of his life in Surrey, where he built a life grounded in hard work, laughter, love, and loyalty. He was a true craftsman — one of the last of his kind — a skilled sawmill tradesman known for his rare ability to run a double saw. His talent and work ethic earned him deep respect from everyone who had the privilege of working beside him.
He shared his best years with Sandra, the love of his life, who passed before him. I find comfort in knowing they’re together again.
He leaves behind his daughter, Melanie, who loved him with all her heart; his grandsons, Josh and Jared, who loved their Grandpa; his beloved granddogs, Sadie and Oakley; his son, Michael; brothers, David (Joyce) and Scott (Lisa) and his nieces and nephews — Shawn, Doug, Breanna, and Zachary and more great nieces and nephews. He’s also remembered fondly by countless friends who became like family over the years.
He loved riding his Harley, having beers with friends, camping under the stars, or just relaxing at home surrounded by the people (and animals) he loved most. He had a big heart, an easy laugh, and a quiet strength that made everyone around him feel safe and cared for.
Though he was baptized as a child, faith wasn’t something he held onto — but I like to believe that in his final moments, he chose heaven, and that he’s at peace now.
We celebrated his life in 2021, surrounded by those who loved him most — a day filled with stories, laughter, and tears, just the way he would have wanted.
I miss him every single day and I will cherish the many years we had the best and closest father/daughter relationship
Until I see you again Dad,
Love Always,
Mel
