

Valerie Elizabeth McClendon, a devoted wife, loving mother, and strong-willed woman, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on May 3, 1947, in Dublin Ireland, Valerie was the eldest daughter of Ben and Irene Kelly, and the protective "momma bear" to her family and her six sisters, Sylvia, Audrey, Myrtle, June, Eileen, Sharon and brother Bernie. Valerie was predeceased by her brothers, Edwin and Raymond.
At the age of 9, Valerie immigrated from Dublin, Ireland to Canada, with her family, seeking a better life for all. Her love for Dublin remained strong, and in 2016, she cherished the opportunity to revisit the city she had left over 50 years earlier.
Valerie led a life of remarkable diversity and achievement. She first made her mark working as a Veterinary Technician to later being the strong business owner running the Aldergrove Animal Hospital, for 25 years, where her compassion and dedication to animals shone brightly. In recent years, she successfully owned an auto mechanic shop and worked at the Seven Oaks Customer Service Booth, proving that she could excel in any endeavor she pursued.
Valerie's home was adorned with reminders of her passion for horses and the Kentucky Derby, a testament to her enduring love for the sport and animal. She was thrilled to celebrate her birthday each year by watching the Derby, an event that brought her immense joy. One surprise birthday gift was a trip to the Kentucky Derby.
Family was the cornerstone of Valerie’s life. She cherished family time, never missing a summer in Penticton, and was a pillar of strength and love for her husband, Jim McClendon, and their children, Natalie (Kevin), Kelly, Tyler (Katrina), grandchildren Devin “Sweetcheeks”, Preston, Colby and great granddaughter Aila. Her legacy of unwavering support, strength, and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Valerie was renowned for her exceptional fashion sense and style, amassing a large collection of designer wear, hats, shoes, and purses. She turned heads everywhere she went, often being stopped by strangers who wanted to admire her outfits and beauty. On special occasions, everyone eagerly anticipated seeing what she would wear, never disappointing those in attendance.
Valerie also found joy in simple pleasures, like watching classic movies on TV. Her favorite pastimes were a reflection of her appreciation for the timeless and the treasured. Valerie also found excitement when the football season arrived. Most Sundays you would find Valerie cheering on her favourite football teams with immense anticipation and excitement. Let’s also not forget hockey season. If it wasn’t football it was hockey. She loved both sports and enjoyed them with Jim, her children, brothers and sisters.
Valerie Elizabeth McClendon will never be forgotten. She touched countless hearts with her kindness, strength, and unyielding values. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Rest in peace, Valerie. You were a phenomenal woman, and your legacy of love and strength will endure forever.
