I recall a bad winter storm in the early 90's when Sunridge Place was iced in, and Vern and Rosella took in my daughter and I and made us welcome in their home, to which we were able to access by crawling on the icey street up their driveway, which was not quite as steep as ours! He was always kind, smart and funny and taught me well about planting Walla Walla onions. My daughter, Nevada, and I were very sad to hear of his passing. He gave us snapdragons to plant in our garden and to this day I always think of Vern when I see those flowers in bloom.

I was a student of Vernon Toews at Whitman College. He was a great man. I'm really glad I knew him.

Herr Toews gave so much.  Almost 30 years after I was in his class at Whitman, I still recall the beautiful slides he showed of the great churches and cathedrals of Europe, and the great advice he gave us as we practiced our German in class.  I have heard myself echoing his words many times as I work with students.  He was an excellent teacher, and a great man.  I am sorry to learn of his passing, but grateful that I knew him, even for only a short time.
