Billie was born on October 28, 1935 in Brownfield, Texas. At a young age, she was welcomed into the home of Avery and Pauline Mayes who were her parents. She grew up all around west Texas. In 1954, she attended Draughns Business College and made Abilene her home. She went on to work for Jim Best State Farm Insurance as an office manager for many years before retiring. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She never married or had any children. However, if you visited her home you would never know she had many pictures of her beloved nieces, nephews, and friends’ children on display. As her nieces and nephews had children, she was excited to gain another generation of pictures. She shared a special relationship with her only sister, Frankie. Billie lived an amazing life overcoming many trials from childhood up through adulthood. She was persistent, strong willed, and possessed an abiding faith that remained her compass throughout life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Frankie Carter and her husband, Bobby; and her nephew, Stephen Carter.
She is survived by her nieces and their families, Jan Carter, Sara Lackey, and Carolyn Harper. Friends: Linda Bragg; and Helen Moore and her family; cousins, Margaret Cannon and Charlene Crisp.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.elliott-hamil.com for the Mayes family.
