Cody E. Thompson was born on March 3, 1923, in a small community called Post in Haskell county. His parents were Preston and Ellen (West) Thompson. He died on Sunday, October 10, 2010, at the age of 87. His funeral service will be held at Elliott Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, on Wednesday, October 13 at 2:00pm. Officiating will be Kevin Ueckert. Burial will follow at Spring Creek Cemetery in Avoca, Texas. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 12 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the funeral home.
Cody, along with five sisters and one brother, was raised in the Stamford area. He served his country in the Army as a machine gunner during World War II. He was with the 349th Infantry during the Rome Arno Campaign in Italy. After returning home, he met and married Clelie Hughes. On June 12, 2010, they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. During their married life, they lived in Stamford, Dallas, and, since 1952, Abilene. They have been members of South Side Baptist Church for over 40 years. Cody retired from Ponca Wholesale in 1985.
As a member of what has been called the Greatest Generation, the example of Cody's life is a legacy for his children and grandchildren. He loved and worshipped God, worked hard to provide for his wife and three daughters, and served his country with pride.
Cody is survived by his wife, Clelie; three daughters, Beverly Hasty, Carol and Bill Dixon, and Brenda and David Freeman; grandchildren, Brian and Elizabeth Cumby, Casey and Misty Cumby, Loran and Mike Mask, Leigh Anne Wood and Amy Freeman; great-grandchildren, Justin, Tracey, Caroline, and Duncan Cumby, Cody and Alexis Cunningham, and Hannah and John Michael Yee; one sister Wanda Wade and sister-in-law Sue Collom. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher James Hasty.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice Care and Meals on Wheels.
