

The daughter of Zelpha E. and Thomas E. Michael, she was born on December 11, 1922 in Walters, OK. Dolores graduated from Holiday High School, attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, and graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in Education. Her love of children led her to a teaching career, including eight years with the Abilene ISD as a 4th grade teacher at Lee Elementary School from 1965-1973.
Dolores was the devoted, loving wife of Guy W. Shaw, Sr., whom she married September 1, 1943 in Wichita Falls, TX. Mrs. Shaw was a member of First Baptist Church in Abilene, where she taught Sunday School to a number of different groups, from young married to her final class of Sr. Adult Ladies of the Lightbearers class. She served on multiple boards and committees, including the committee that formed GLO ("God's Little Ones" daycare center), and was an active member of Women on Mission. Her commitment to her faith was visible through her final days, when she would recite scripture and sing her favorite hymns to her caretakers and family.
Mrs. Shaw was a member and past president of the Abilene Women’s Club, as well as the Quilt Club, the oldest ladies luncheon club in Abilene. She was also a member of The Sewing Club. She served multiple hours and was a past president of Hendrick Medical Auxiliary as well as member and former secretary of the Board of the Salvation Army in Abilene. She was involved with Sigma Alpha Iota, the International Music Fraternity for women at HSU.
Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, two brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include her sons, James M. Shaw, MD and wife, Ellen, of Austin, TX, and Guy W. Shaw, Jr. and wife, Elaine, of Celeste, TX; daughter, Suzanne Shaw of Abilene; 14 grandchildren and their spouses; 21 great-grandchildren - with one more on the way; a sister, Sue Broderson and husband, Emmett of Dimmitt, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She always treasured her time spent with family. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, August 16, 2013 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM, Saturday, August 17, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Abilene with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating.
The private graveside service will be directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.
