Doris Jean was born on August 30, 1928 to Bazzie E. Plowman and Zadie Belle Sanders Plowman in Abilene, Texas. She was raised in the View community and graduated from the Abilene school system. Doris’ great passion in life was her family and particularly her grandkids and great-grandkids. Doris had a special connection with young people. After retiring from the Abilene Public Schools in 1997, she relocated to Kilgore, Texas to be closer to family. Almost immediately, Doris secured a part-time job at Kilgore College. In a very short time, she became “adopted” Grandmother to a large number or students, especially the foreign exchange students. As her youngest grandson described her so perfectly, “Grandma had a coolness about her that transcended generations”.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, William H. “Bill” Speer; her parents, Bazzie and Belle Plowman; brothers, Maxie, Raymond, and Roger Plowman; and a grandson, Randy Blanks.
Survivors include one brother, Eddie Plowman and wife, Jeanette, of View, Texas; two sons, Gary Blanks and wife, Sabrina, of Kilgore, Texas and Richard Blanks and wife, Cindy, of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren, Chris Blanks and wife, Lesley, Justin Blanks, Shayna Miller and husband, Mike, and Sean Tinsley; nine very special great-grandkids; and numerous nieces and nephews.
