Doug Jones, 102 1/2, a longtime resident of Abilene, TX passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Mesa Springs Retirement Health Care Center. He was born January 29, 1916 in Douglas, Arizona to Frank and Katie Jones. He married Nadine Mayhew in Breckenridge, TX on February 28, 1938. The couple moved to Abilene from Big Spring in 1939.
Mr. Jones was a retired employee of Greyhound Bus Lines. He had driven the Greyhound bus route for many years between Abilene and El Paso. Doug was an avid golfer for over 80 years playing the game he loved so much until the age of 98. He was a lifetime member of Abilene Country Club and had achieved over 58 individual tournament wins throughout Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arkansas. Among these were the West Texas Championship for both 1946 and 1947. During his career he played with PGA Tour Players like Billy Maxwell, Don Cherry and Byron Nelson. He actually lost a match-play tournament with Byron Nelson in 1933 by one hole. As most golfers know, Byron Nelson still holds the record for the most consecutive wins on the PGA Tour-Eleven in 1945. Doug also carded twenty hole-in-ones during his career. He was always proud to say that he walked when he played and did not ride in "one of those carts".
Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine, in 2002. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2018 in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery with David Hargrove officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.
