Elvie Fay Hagar

December 6, 1927February 4, 2013

Elvie Fay Hagar, 85, passed away from this life, Monday, February 4, 2013, at a local nursing facility.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2013, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene. Burial will follow in Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Fay was born December 6, 1927 in Bienville, Louisiana to W.M. and Carrie Ann (Tabor) Byers. The family moved to Moran, Texas when Fay was 16. She graduated from Moran High School in 1946. Later that year, she moved to Abilene. In 1948, she met the love of her life, Clarence Ray Hagar and they were married at Burkett Baptist Church in Burkett, Texas on September 6, 1948. They lived in Lawton, Oklahoma; Waco, Texas; and Abilene, Texas. Fay and Ray celebrated 64 years together, last September.

Fay had been a member of the Church of Christ, for the last 64 years. She taught Sunday School for more than 35 of those years, from the kiddos in the Cradle Roll up through middle school. Fay was a voracious reader, enjoying histories, biographies, and novels, but especially the Bible. Of all the gifts she shared, my Mother’s faith was the greatest gift of all.

Fay was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Willard Byers, Thomas Byers, and Daniel Byers; and her sisters, Dora Driscoll, Vira Byers, Cora Robertson, Esther Byers, and Bernice Byers.

Survivors include her husband, Ray; sons, Jeffery of Tye and Michael of Abilene; granddaughter, Christi Moss and husband, Neil Watson, of Alvarado; grandson, Patrick Hagar of Tye; great-granddaughters, Ashleigh and Kelsey of Alvarado; brother, Charles Byers and wife, Norma of Noodle; sister, Velma Byers of Coleman; sisters-in-law, Betty Byers of Abilene and Rita Kearney of Kingsland; one aunt, Ruel Tabor of Moran; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family wishes to thank all those who cared for Fay during her long illness, especially, Dr. Joseph Ferguson, Dr. Nancy Daggubati, Chris McDonald, P.A., and the nurses of Hendrick Congestive Heart Failure Clinic, Mesa Springs Nursing Center, and the wonderful nurses and caregivers of Hendrick Hospice.

Memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory Street, Abilene, Texas 79601; the American Heart Association, 149 North Willis, Abilene, Texas 79603; or the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas 79605.

In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.
