Ethel Vera Johnson

Ethel Vera, age 99, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 31, 2013 in Pensacola, Florida. Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 am Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, Abilene, TX. Graveside services will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery with her great-nephew, Rev. Phillip Thomas of Elgin, TX officiating.

Ethel Vera was born in Mercedes, Texas and the family moved to Lubbock shortly after her birth. In 1918 they moved to Abilene where she lived for more than eighty years, met and married the love of her life, E.G. Johnson Jr. (her husband for 60 years). She attended McMurry College. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Abilene where she was a member of the LLL Club, Lois/Lighthouse Sunday School Class. Ethel was proud of her heritage and was a member of the West Texas Genealogical Society. She also was a member of the Creative Arts Club, 20th Century Study Club and the Thursday Sewing Club. After moving to Pensacola, FL in 2000, she became a member of the Homebound Department of Myrtle Grove Baptist Church (Pensacola).

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ethel Murfee; husband E.G. Johnson Jr.; daughter Julia Kay Johnson Matlock and brother Byron T. Murfee.

She is survived by her daughter, Janis M. Deal (Charles) of Pensacola, FL; granddaughters, Molly Suzanne Matlock of Durham, NC and Michele C. Janowski (Stephen) of Mobile, AL; son-in-law, John Matlock (Donna) of Knoxville, TN; great-grandchildren, Ashlen and Aiden Janowski of Mobile, AL and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, Ethel Vera asked that memorials be made to West Texas Rehab Center or First Baptist Church Abilene – Family Life Center or Library.

The family wishes to thank Emerald Coast Hospice (Milton, FL) and Covenant Hospice (Pensacola, FL), Ophelia Brown (Abilene), and caretakers Mary and Kenny Keith (Pensacola, FL) for the wonderful care she received during her prolonged illness.
