He was born on May 1st, 1945, in Cameron, Texas, to Ventura and Lilly Ornelas Leija.
Felipe Leija, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on October 15th in Abilene, Texas. Known for his strength, skill, and generous spirit, Felipe was a man of many trades —a talented welder and mechanic who could fix just about anything. His hands built and repaired, but they also comforted and supported those he loved.
Felipe found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, watching wrestling, and immersing himself in classic western movies and music. He also loved to tell his joke about “The Armadillo”—a story that brought smiles and laughter to those around him and became a cherished part of his legacy.
He is survived by his sons, David Leija and wife Sylvia, Andy Leija and wife Shannon; daughters, Connie De Los Santos and husband Hector, Gloria Bell and husband Kyle, Christina Deleon and husband Paul and Melissa Honea and husband Cody; Significant other, Adela Moreno; brothers, Albert Leija, Benito Leija:, sisters, Sally Alsides, Lena Leija, and Erlinda Rocha; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of hard work, humor, and love.
He is predeceased by his wife, Isabel Leija; son, Richard Leija; and sons-in-law, Terry Allen and William Hules.
Felipe’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His life was a testament to dedication, family, and the quiet strength of a man who gave his all.
A visitation for Felipe will be held Monday, October 20, 2025, at 5:00 PM followed by a Rosary at 6:00 PM at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, TX 79606. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church, 2525 Westview Dr, Abilene, TX 79603. A committal service will follow at Tye Cemetery, in Tye, Texas.
