George Charles Newman

Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2012, in Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Abilene, Texas, with Reverend Justin Lane officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends at a visitation 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

George was born February 3, 1932 to Arthur Newman and Hazel Stewart Newman in Topeka, Kansas. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Ross for 51 years. George served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring after 20 years. He earned a Bachelor of Business from Abilene Christian University. George was an accountant for West Texas Utilities, retiring after many years. He also taught Math at Cisco Junior College for several years and was an active member of the Kiwanis Club. George loved to garden and liked to be outside. He enjoyed barbequing and was known for his great chili. George loved his children and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gamar Newman; and a sister, Kathryn Georgia.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. Dorothy Newman of Abilene; a son, George R. Newman of Abilene; a daughter, Kyra Newman Staples and husband, Bill, of Chandler, Arizona; a brother, Stewart Newman of Boston; a sister, Mary Blackwell of Topeka, Kansas; grandchildren, Joshua and Alison Staples of Chandler, Arizona; and a host of nieces and nephews.
