

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Community Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, 1443 North 2nd Street, Abilene, with Pastor Matthew M. Lubin officiating. Burial will follow in Abilene City Cemetery, directed by Community Memorial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Gertie was born June 17, 1938 in Lufkin, Texas to R.E. Cartwright and Gladys Booker. She attended Woodson High School in Abilene, Texas. Thereafter, Gertie was a devoted domestic worker for many years before retiring in the early 90’s.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Paul R. Booker; sister, Edna M. Bradford; brother, Elray Garrett; and nephew, Dennis Bradford.
Gertie leaves to cherish her memory: one nephew, Larry Garrett (Jenny) of Heuvelton, New York; six nieces, Denise Bradford-Iles (Joseph) of Leesburg, Georgia, Racquel Garrett, Sylvia Reed, Jackie Reed, all of Abilene, Texas, Regina Reed of Fort Worth, Texas; and Rhonda Bradford of Abilene, Texas; fourteen great-nieces and great-nephews, Marcus Garrett, Eric Garrett, Jazmine Garrett, Tiffany Garrett, Ahmad Roberts, Angela Starks (Kendrick), Alexys Garrett, Courtney Bradford, Darian Bradford, Shamika Mack (Cory), Quasheda Jones, and Joseph Jones; fourteen great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; special niece, Bre’Lynn “Punchy” Simon; God-daughter, Janice Stallworth of Suisun, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.
