

Ira Thomas May, 89, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2014 at Holiday Hills Nursing Center in Coleman, TX. A memorial service will be held at 2:00p.m. on Friday, August 8, 2014 in the Perkins Chapel at First Central Presbyterian Church, 400 Orange St., Abilene, TX. Rev. Janice Six will officiate. Arrangements were under the care of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St.
Ira was born to Ira Hodge and Velma Dean Wiley May in Meridian, Mississippi on November 11, 1924. He attended schools in Mississippi and graduated from Meridian High School, then furthered his education and graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor’s degree. Ira served his country proudly in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII; 15th Air Force; 450th Bomb Group; was a bombardier on the B24 Liberator; and served in the European Theater of War.
Ira was employed by Oil Transport Co. and Merchants Inc. He retired in 1987 and enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and his family was very important to him. Ira and his wife have proudly been members and of service at First Central Presbyterian Church since 1952.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and his son, Gordon Thomas May.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Nina May of Abilene; his sons, Royce May of Lubbock, and Cory Don May and his wife, Laura of Abilene; his daughter, Patty Davis and husband, Gary of Abilene; his brother, William H. May and his wife, Evelyn of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren, Kelly Bentley, Kable Bo Davis, James Ira May, Amanda Sundin, Mallory McConnell, Donald Hartmann; and two great-granddaughters, Sarah Marie Boyd and Ellie Marie Harris.
